Dolls&Party 2015: experience

¡¡Muy buenas!! Ya han pasado unos cuantos días desde que volví de Barcelona y estoy impaciente por contaros mi experiencia en la Dolls&Party edición 2015.

Como muchos sabréis, la Dolls&Party es el mayor evento nacional sobre BJD y otros tipos de muñecas articuladas en España. Se celebró el 4 de julio en el hotel Hilton Diagonal Mar Barcelona y sus principales características son la causa benéfica y su proyección internacional.

Quiero hablar de varios temas así que estructuraré la review en varios puntos. Dicho esto, ¡¡bienvenidos a mi post sobre la segunda edición de la Dolls&Party!!

Hi there!! It’s been a few days since I came back from Barcelona and I’m eager to tell you my experience in Dolls&Party 2015 edition.

As many of you know, the Dolls & Party is the biggest national event about BJD and other articulated dolls in Spain. It was held on July 4 at the Hilton Diagonal Mar Barcelona hotel and its main features are the charity and its international projection.

I want to talk about various issues so I’ll divide this review in several points. That said, welcome to my post about the second edition of the Dolls&Party!!

 

 

1. Resumen de mi día / Overview of my day

 

Me invitaron a la Dolls & Party en calidad de fotógrafa así que estuve en el Hilton sobre las 7 de la mañana. De buena mañana empecé a reconocer gente con la que sólo tenía contacto por internet, entre ellos Eva_Aura, ¡que resultó ser un amor de chica!

They invited me to the Dolls&Party as the photographer so I went to the Hilton hotel at 7 in the morning. At first I already started to recognize people I had contact only by internet, including Eva_Aura, who turned out to be a lovely girl!

 

 

Una vez dentro me puse en contacto con la organización, empecé a ayudar con el montaje e hice fotos de la gente montando stand. Personalmente me encantan este tipo de instantáneas porque son espontáneas y en ellas se ve a los escultores, costureros y artistas en general disfrutando del hobby con otros compañeros.

Once inside, I got in touch with the staff, I started to help setting stuff and took pictures of people working on their stands. Personally I love this kind of pictures because they are spontaneous and you can see sculptors, dressmakers and mostly artists enjoying this hobby with others.

 

 

He de decir que la sala del Hotel Hilton era mejor que la del año pasado: más grande, con zonas de relax como las mesas y sillas del centro, techos altos que daban sensación de amplitud y además se estaba fresquito. Quizás el hecho de que las luces fueran todas de techo molestó a algunos ya que en las muñecas y personas se creaban sombras por debajo del pelo que precisamente no resaltaban positivamente las facciones.

I must say that the room was better than last year’s: it was bigger, with relax area at the center with tables and chairs, high ceilings giving spaciousness feeling and it also had great AC. Perhaps the fact that the all the lights were at the ceiling upset someone as this kind of shadows don’t work out too well on dolls and people. 

 

 

Cuando Murasaki.me montó stand le dejé a mi pequeña Nébula ahí con unas cuantas tarjetas y postales de regalo, junto al resto de su ropa y sus muñecas (¡muchas gracias a las dos Uriko y KuraiKawaii! no sé qué haría sin vosotras en las D&P jajaja). El resto del día me lo pasé dando vueltas por toda la sala haciendo fotos y saludando tanto a nuevas caras como a las ya conocidas. El ambiente que se respiraba era alegre y lleno de emoción. También tuve tiempo de hacer mis compras, pero sobre esto hablaré en el próximo post con más fotos 😛

When Murasaki.me finished setting her stand I left my little Nebula there with a few cards and postcards, along with the rest of her clothes and dolls (thank you very much to both of you! I don’t know what I’d do without you Uriko and KuraiKawaii lol). The rest of the day I walked around the room, taking pictures and meeting new faces and also those already known. The atmosphere there was cheerful and full of emotion. I also had time to do my shopping, but I’ll talk about it in the next post with more pics 😛

2. Stands

Este año hubo 77 stands, bastantes más que en la edición anterior que fueron unos 50. Aquí podéis ver el mapa del evento:

There were 77 stands this year, many more than in the previous edition, which were 50 approximately. Here you can see the map of the event:

El recinto se dividía en varias zonas: los números son stands comerciales y las letras representan diversas actividades como pueden ser los dioramas (H) o el escenario (C). Me pasé por todos y cada uno de los stands para hacer la foto de rigor: algunos posaban, otros invitaban a sus amigos a unirse, otros preferían estar colocando productos y otros directamente no quisieron salir detrás del stand, pero eso sí, todos me respondieron con la sonrisa en la cara. Es curioso la de veces que tuve que decir eso de “can I take you a picture?” en vez de “¿os puedo hacer una foto?”, una muestra más del significante número de invitados internacionales que asistieron a la D&P. The exhibition was divided into two areas: the numbers are exhibitor’s stands and the letters represent various activities such as dioramas (H) or the stage (C). I went through each and every one of the stands to take their picture: some of them posed, others invited their friends to join, others preferred to act like they were attending clients and other directly refused to appear, but yes, they all answered me with a smile on their face. It’s funny how many times I had to say: «Can I take you a picture?» Instead of «¿puedo hacerte una foto?» (in spanish), another example of the significant number of international guests at the D&P. 3. Actividades / Activities

 

¡Porque las compras no lo son todo! Y por esta razón este año la D&P estaba cargada de actividades, concursos y rifas para todos los gustos. Hubo una en especial de la que yo formé parte: una reunión entre bloggers y Sakura y Eduard, dos de los organizadores del evento.

Comentaré brevemente las actividades que se realizaron empezando precisamente por esta reunión donde pudimos hacer preguntas al staff de la D&P y nos respondieron al detalle 🙂

But shopping is not everything! And for this reason this year the D&P was full of activities, contests and raffles for everyone. There was one in particular in which I took part: a bloggers meeting with Sakura and Eduard, two members of the staff.

I’ll describe a little bit some of the activities, starting precisely with that meeting where we could ask questions to the D&P staff and they answered in detail 🙂

 

 

-Reunión con bloggers / blogger’s meeting:

Sobre las 12 del mediodía nos reunimos con Sakura y su pareja, Eduard, que nos hicieron una pequeña introducción de lo que es la Dolls & Party. Entre otras cosas nos contaron por qué la D&P se organiza desde una asociación sin ánimo de lucro, y es básicamente porque los beneficios que podrían obtener después del evento son mínimos comparados con el trabajo que lleva organizarlo y, en cambio, ese dinero en manos de asociaciones benéficas tiene un valor incalculable. El objetivo económico del staff es quedarse a 0, es decir, recuperar la inversión inicial, y el beneficio obtenido a partir de ahí se dona a AFANOC (Associació de Familiars i Amics de Nens Oncològics de Catalunya) y SPAM (Societat Protectora d’Animals de Mataró). También nos dieron algunos datos objetivos como que en general todo ha aumentado un 30% ~ 40% respecto de la primera edición de la D&P. Las entradas, por ejemplo, pasaron de venderse aproximadamente 500 el año pasado a 700 este año. Hay mucha más participación internacional y más stands.

About 12am we met Sakura and her partner, Eduard, who made us a little introduction of what the Dolls&Party is. Among other things, they told us why the D&P is a non-profit event, and it’s basically because the benefits they could obtain after it are minimal compared to their work, and that money in the hands of charities is invaluable. The economic aim of the staff is to stay at 0, ie, recover the initial investment, and the extra profit is donated to AFANOC (Association of familiars and friends of children with cancer in Catalunya) and SPAM (Humane Society for animals in Mataró). We also got some objective data such as the general increase by 30% ~ 40% in everything, comparing it to the first edition of the D&P. Tickets, for example, sold increased from about 500 last year to 700 this year. There is also more international participation.

 

 

Luego vino la ronda de preguntas por nuestra parte (para la que iba preparada con mi libreta y boli), y de ahí salieron algunos temas interesantes. Os cito algunos:

-¿Por qué se han retirado los concursos de customización o fotografía?
“Porque hubo poca participación. Nosotros analizamos qué actividades interesan más y a esas les dedicaremos más esfuerzo. Va en cuestión de la demanda por parte de los visitantes.”

-¿Cómo surgió la idea de la Dolls & Party?
“La idea surgió entre Sakura, Michiru y Eduard, y empezó a tomar cuerpo después de que Sakura y Eduard visitaran un evento similar en Japón, donde se dieron cuenta de que no estaba a la altura de los artistas. Creemos que el mundo BJD es un arte poco reconocido y que tiene mucho camino por recorrer. Es un hobby del futuro”.

–A Sakura: Una muñeca/molde que te encante y otro que no tendrías nunca en casa:
“Mis preferidos son los dragones de Aileen Doll, y por otra parte no hay ningún molde que no me gusta, con una buena customización todos pueden brillar”

-¿Qué dificultades ha habido durante la organización de esta segunda edición de la Dolls & Party?
“En principio dos: el hecho de estar viviendo en Reino Unido, y luego un problema logístico por el hecho de que algunas sponsor dolls aún están en aduanas…”

–A Sakura: ¿Qué opinas sobre la comunidad BJD española de hoy en día?
“Tenemos una afición muy muy grande que une muchas generaciones, quizás más grande que muchos otros países. Rencillas habrá siempre, pero a parte de eso, los visitantes de la D&P son muy educados y vienen a pasar un buen rato. En cuanto a la comunidad online, se está pasando de los foros a las redes sociales.”

 

Then there was time for questions (for which I was prepared with my notebook and pen), and we talked about interesting topics. I quote a few:

-Why have you removed contests such as Best customization or Best photography?
«Because there was little participation. We analyze what activities are more interesting to people, and then we put more effort to these. It’s about the demand from visitors.»

-How did the idea of ​​the Dolls&Party come about?
«The idea came from Sakura, Michuru and Eduard, and it started taking shape after Sakura and Eduard visited a similar event in Japan, where they realized that it wasn’t at the level of the artists. We believe that the BJD world is art, a little recognized art, but it has long way to go. It’s a hobby of the future.»

-To Sakura: A doll/head mold you love, and another one who never would have at home:
«My favorites ones are the dragons of Aileen Doll, and moreover there is no mold that I do not like, with a good customization all doll can shine»

-Which difficulties have been in the organization of this second edition of the Dolls&Party?
«In principle two: the fact of living in the UK, and then a logistical problem that made some sponsor dolls were still in customs…»

-To Sakura: What do you think of the Spanish BJD community of today?
«We have a very big hobby that unites many generations, perhaps larger than many other countries. There will always be quarrels, but apart from that, the D&P visitors are highly polite and they come to have a good time. As for the online community, it’s moving from forums to social networks.»

 

-Lollipop game:

Se trata de un juego de azar en el que, comprando previamente un ticket para participar, eliges un lollipop, lo levantas y, si tienes suerte, en el palo habrá una pegatina de color asignada a un premio. Dependo del color, podrás optar a un premio u otro. Aquí algunos de ellos.

Nos comentaron en la reunión de bloggers que ésta fue una de las actividades con más participación y que incluso contaron con la ayuda de un estadista para diseñarla.

It is a game of chance in which you buy your participation, choose a lollipop, raise it and look at the stick and if you’re lucky, there will be a sticker with a color assigned to a prize in it. Depending on the color, you’ll get a prize or another. Here you have some of them.

We were told at the bloggers meeting that this was one of the activities with more participation and they even had the help of a statistician to design it.

 

 

-Comparison heaven:

Aquí podías fotografiar a la muñeca que llevaras para colaborar en la database del proyecto llamado Comparison Heaven en el que se comparan medidas de todo tipo de BJD.

Here you could take pictures of your doll to collaborate in the project called Comparison Heaven, a database where all BJD measures are compared.

-Diorama mania:

Si llevabas tu muñeca y cámara en mano, los dioramas eran una parada imprescindible. Se trata de fondos de diferente temática, como un bosque, una calle o la luna llena. Ahí me encontré con una mujer que hasta venía preparada con trípode para aprovechar a tope los dioramas.

If you carried your doll and camera in hand, the dioramas were an essential stop. These are different themed backgrounds, such as a forest, a street or a full moon. I even found a woman there who came prepared with tripod to fully use these dioramas.

 

 

-Best doll owner games:

Aquí se trataba de ir superando pruebas, como adivinar mímica, para conseguir llegar entre los tres primeros, que evidentemente tenían premio. La ganadora fue una chica alemana que se llevó a casa ni más ni menos que un dragoncito de Aileen Doll!

In this game you had to pass several stages, as the mime game, to get into the top 3, who obviously won a prize. The winner was a german girl who took home a little dragon by Aileen Doll!!

 

 

-Doll raffle:

Definitivamente la actividad más popular y emocionante de la Dolls & Party. Yo participé con una papeleta aunque no me tocó (¡por poco!). Lo mejor de este sorteo es que puedes introducir la papeleta para la muñeca que quieras y así te centras en el premio que te gusta. Las muñecas que se sorteaban eran parte de las sponsor dolls, vestidas y maquilladas por diferentes artistas. Cientos de personas tenían la mirada fija en el escenario donde subían y bajaban los afortunados, muchos con lágrimas en los ojos de la emoción.

Definitely one the most popular and exciting activities at the Dolls&Party. I entered the raffle with one ticket, but I did not win (almost!). The best thing about this raffle is that you can enter for the doll you want and this way you focus on the prize that you like. The prizes were sponsor dolls, dressed and made-up by different artists, and some of them were there. Hundreds of people outstanding the stage, looking how the lucky ones received their dolls, many of them with tears in their eyes.

 

 

 

4. Comparación con la D&P 2014 / D&P 2014 VS D&P 2015

 

Como ya he comentado, este año todo fue un 30~40% más grande o más numeroso que el año pasado. Tomaron nota de lo que no gustó en la primera edición, como fue el tema de la comida: ya no había bentos ni ningún tipo de comida ofrecida por el staff. Se notó el bajón de afluencia al medio día por este tema, ya que la gente salía afuera a comer lo que les apetecía. Personalmente creo que, a falta de un mejor catering, esta solución es más que correcta.

As I said, this year everything was 30 ~ 40% larger or more numerous than last year. They realized that some things didn’t like in the first edition, and they changed it, for instance the food issue: there was no bento or any food offered by the staff. The people flow at lunch time was quite noticeable, as people came out to eat what they wanted. I personally believe that, for lack of a better catering, this solution is more than correct.

 

 

También anunciaron que ya tenían reservado el mismo Hotel para una tercera edición de la Dolls&Party, en julio de 2016. Si siguen escuchando las críticas constructivas como lo han hecho este año, auguro que va a ser un evento digno de recordar.

They also announced that they had already booked the same hotel for a third edition of the Dolls&Party, in July 2016. If they keep listening to constructive criticism as they have done this year, I think it will be an event worth remembering.

 

 

Por la parte que me toca, y puestos a pedir, me encantaría que hubiera algo relacionado más íntimamente con la fotografía. Sé que había dioramas, pero, no sé, por proponer: alguna exposición, tutoriales, master class en vivo… quizás pido demasiado y el concurso que había el año pasado ya me bastaría, pero es una pena que haya tan poca participación… Gente, ¡¡¡os tenéis que animar!!! ¡La fotografía es el arte que nos permite compartir nuestras bellezas en la comunidad online! ¡A coger vuestras cámaras ya! jajaja

As far as I am concerned, as a photographer, I would love to have something more closely related to photography at the D&P. I know there were dioramas, but for instance, I would propose some exhibitions, tutorials, live master class… maybe I’m asking too much and the Photography contest last year would be enough for me, but it’s a shame that there was little participation… People, I encourage you to take your camera!!! Photography is the art that allows us to share our beauties in the online community! Get your cameras now! hahaha

 

 

5. Opinión general / Overall opinion

Para terminar, sólo queda comentar cómo me sentí yo entre tanta muñeca y tanta fiesta… Primero, me gustaría contar que me hizo una tremenda ilusión que contaran conmigo como fotógrafa del evento: el día en que Sakura se puso en contacto conmigo y me contó el plan, me puse a llamar a mis amigos para contárselo xDD Ha sido una experiencia enriquecedora, he aprendido y me he divertido a partes iguales.

Finally, there’s one latest thing I want to comment, and it’s how I felt between all those ‘dolls’ a and all that ‘party’… First, I was so excited that the D&P staff asked me to be their photographer for the event: the day Sakura contacted me and explained me the plan, I called my friends to tell them! hahaha It has been an enriching experience, I have learned and I had fun in equal measure.

 

 

Otra de las cosas que adoro de la D&P son los reencuentros: volver a ver a mis amigos de DD, esas reuniones en el stand de Murasaki.me 😛 (¡y picarme con Yuriko por los sets fairy kei! jajaja); también reencontrarme con mis amigos por parte de la comunidad BJD, ponerle cara a gente con la que tengo contacto a través del ordenador (importante xDD), y una cosa que me sorprende y me alegra a la vez: la gente que me reconoce y me dice que sigue mi trabajo online, en estos casos no me puedo sentir más agradecida y contenta de que hayáis pasado a saludarme!!  ≧◡≦

Another thing I loved about the D&P are the encounters: to see again my DD friends, those meetings in the Murasaki.me stand, also meet again with my friends by the BJD community, see the faces of the people with whom I have contact through the internet, and one thing that specially surprises me and I am happy at the same time: people who recognize me and tell me they follow my work online, in this case I can not feel me more grateful and happy!! ≧◡≦

 

 

En fin, creo que la Dolls & Party es un punto de reunión imprescindible para cualquier enamorado de este hobby, se tiene que vivir. Y lo dice alguien que -de momento- no tiene ninguna BJD ni Pullip/Blythe en la colección, justamente los tipos de muñecas que más abundaban. Aún así, es una pasada ver el trabajo de los artesanos y poder hablar con ellos cara a cara, sentir la pasión en el ambiente y ser parte de ella. La verdad es que esta es una afición preciosa y la gente que hace posible la D&P la trata desde el mayor respeto y admiración.

Anyway, I think the Dolls&Party is an essential meeting point for anyone who loves this hobby, you have to live it. And I’m someone who -for the moment- has no BJD nor Pullip/Blythe… precisely the kind of dolls with more presence at the D&P. Still, it’s amazing to see the work of craftsmen and talk to them face to face, feel the passion in the environment and be part of it. The truth is that this is a beautiful hobby and the people who make the D&P possible, they do it from the greatest respect and admiration.
